Introduction
In pursuance of reinforcing diversity and gender equity in Asset management while meeting our objective to professionalize and uplift the role of asset management and maintenance practitioners in Southern Africa, SAAMA is launching a mentorship programme. The summit is sweeter when others follow.
Purpose
The purpose of this program is to provide a support system for personal and career development, especially in these uncertain times. With our socio-economic challenges and the prevailing economic environment, we acknowledge that our membership is going through organisational restructuring, resulting in career transitions and personal adjustments.
Objectives
- Professional Development: Assist members in their journey towards professional registration and ensure their registration within the minimum required time.
- Personal Growth: Provide personalised assistance tailored to unique developmental needs.
- Soft Skills Training: Include training on essential and appropriate soft skills.
Program Structure
This will be achieved by running two complementary programs, a traditional mentorship program and coaching circles, until the end of November 2025.
Mentorship
Develop a platform that connects Experienced Specialists and Professionals passionate about teaching with aspiring Asset Management professionals eager to learn. Our program is supported by dedicated mentors who offer continuous support and guidance, aiding candidates in the completion of their professional registration applications.
An initial discussion will establish a baseline measure for each candidate, identifying developmental gaps. This practical approach ensures that candidates gain comprehensive, hands-on experience in their areas of deficiency, fostering well-rounded professional development. Recognising the importance of well-rounded development, our program will support the identification of soft skills training gaps.
Roles of Engagement for Mentors and Mentees
Mentors
- Mentorship Commitment: Mentors are expected to commit a minimum of 2 hours per month to their mentees. This includes one-on-one meetings, providing feedback, and offering guidance on professional development.
- Support and Guidance: Mentors should provide continuous support and guidance, aiding mentees in their professional registration applications and career development.
- Skill Sharing: Mentors are encouraged to share their expertise and experiences, helping mentees develop both technical and soft skills.
- Confidentiality: Mentors must maintain confidentiality regarding any personal or professional information shared by their mentees.
Mentees
- Active Participation: Mentees are expected to actively participate in the program by attending scheduled meetings, completing assigned tasks, and seeking feedback from their mentors.
- Goal Setting: Mentees should set clear personal and professional goals and work with their mentors to develop a plan to achieve them.
- Open Communication: Mentees should maintain open and honest communication with their mentors, sharing their progress, challenges, and any concerns they may have.
- Respect and Professionalism: Mentees must show respect and professionalism in all interactions with their mentors and other program participants.
- Confidentiality: Mentees must maintain confidentiality regarding any personal or professional information shared by their mentors.
Coaching Circles
Organised sessions where a related topic is shared with a group of engaged mentees and like-minded individuals, and establish a platform for collaboration where ideas can be exchanged and discussions encouraged.
